LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK

Lake Mburo National Park is located in Western Uganda. The park is situated approximately 240 km (150 mi) by road west of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. It takes approximately 3.4 hours to drive from Kampala to Lake Mburo National Park. The park has a variety of animals such as Zebras, Impala, Buffaloes and over 200 bird species. At 26 km2, the park is the smallest of Uganda's Savannah national parks.

Lake Mburo, along with 13 other lakes, is a part of a wetland system linked by a swamp. The smallest of Uganda’s national parks, Lake Mburo National Park has ancient Precambrian metamorphic rocks which date back over 500 million years. A safari here will yield plentiful birdwatching opportunities (over 350 different types of birds), as well as large game like zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi and reedbuck.

Activities in Lake Mburo National Park

Boat Trips:

The most popular activity in Lake Mburo is the motobarboat trip on the lake. A journey on the lake will provide great opportunities to observe resident hippo and crocodiles. Water bird species are often too numerous for even the keenest birder to identity them all. These great wildlife experiences coupled with the stunning scenery and panoramic landscape shows off true African beauty.

Guided Walks:

One of the most unique activities in Lake Mburo National Park is the guided walk. Guests are permitted to walk anywhere in the park in the company of an armed park ranger. This gives tourist the chance to absord the wonders of the African bush outside the condines of a vehicle.

Horse Back Safari:

Lake Mburo National Park is the only park in Uganda where Horse Back Safaris are offered. This experience gives you the opportunity to get close to wild animals in a way others can't. Perfect for both experienced riders and beginners, the Horse Back Safari will ge your heart racing and your adrenaline pumping. Ranging from 1 hour rides to 3 day overnight Safaris, this experience is not to be missed.

Ankole Cultural Centre:

The Bankyankole community surrounding Lake Mburo National Park have created the 'Ankole Cultural Centre' to highlight the customs and history of their kingdom. The cultural Centre is situated just outside the park near the Sanga gate. A visit to the Centre will introduce you to the traditional culture of the area and the local way of life. Typical village houses can be visited and Ankole guides will explain their people's history and lifestyle. Distinctive Ankole handmade crafts can be purchased as souvenirs.
